Smartly Choosing the Best Moving Company

It was my first experience with a moving company in Edmonton and I would say, I had the best time dealing with them.

It all started when we urgently needed a delivery service in Edmontonto receive and deliver stuff to my uncle who lives overseas. Looking for a reliable long distance moving company in Canada seemed difficult at first considering I know nothing about moving in Calgary AB. We had no idea which moving service in Calgary to hire since there were many of them and naturally, we didn't want to fall victim to a fraud.

My wonderful experience with a moving company led me to the realization that there are easy ways to spot a dependable moving company in town. They are as follows:

' Be sure the mover carries the Workers' Compensation Insurance. This is important because if someone gets hurt while in the process of moving (this is common in an industry that deals with moving heavy objects), you might be held liable should an employee of a moving company without Workers' Compensation Insurance succumb to injury. This type of insurance substantially adds to a moving company's cost of business, so an unscrupulous moving company would normally scrimp on this area.

' Find a mover with local presence. Better opt for a moving company which offers its services in your area. Since it works locally, it would be easier for you to check it out, get references from local people, or maybe even check out their facilities. Avoid booking your move with an Internet broker because they could just hand your business over to a company you have zero knowledge of.

' Make sure your mover is licensed.

' Get a recommendation. Talk referrals from someone who has worked with a moving company before; preferably people who has done repeat business with a specific mover.

' Reasonable charges. Treat any low bid with a skeptical eye ' why does that mover charge so little? Make sure your bid is in line with other companies' bids. Look for possible hidden clauses (skipping on Workers' Comp, for example) or additional charges later on.

' Make sure you feel comfortable with the on-site estimator. The estimator is a reflection of the company he works for, so if you feel uncomfortable or if he leaves your questions hanging in the air, then stop it right there.

' Payment terms. Are you paying an hourly rate or by weight? The moving charges of most local movers are based on the time it takes to complete the move. Charges on long-distance moves within a particular state are often calculated according to the weight of shipment. Again, the rules vary from one state to another so clarify all the details with a potential moving company.

These facts will prove very helpful to people who are experiencing moving for the first time. It pays to be smart in choosing a moving company in order to avoid being fooled in the end.
